Get past the swearing and discover great concepts & messages.
21 Guns is in NO way about weapons or violence. The title references a 21 gun salute (performed to honor a dead military officer) and the song is anti-war and about the trauma that war imposes on pope. It isn't graphic at all and has a very good message. Just had to clear that up a bit.
Bold Music and Lyrics - okay for later teens, but not tweens!
As a lover of punk music, I can't fault Green Day for bringing the sound back with a vengeance. HOWEVER, Common Sense is way off in recommending this for age 13 and up. I think there are few 13-year-olds who will grasp the sarcasm behind some of the lyrics, and I certainly hope most of them won't get the references to sodomy, lobotomies and violent revolution. My 13-year-old son bought this before we'd really reviewed the lyrics and themes, and we're stuck with it now - as well as with a teen son who now has a whole new vocabulary he enjoys using whenever he wants to provoke us.
Poor Rating from Common Sense -Lyrics from Horseshoes And Handgrenades:
"I'm gonna burn it all down
I'm gonna rip it out
Well everything that you employ
Was meant for me to destroy to the ground now
So don't f**k me around because I'll shoot you down
I'm gonna drink, fight and f**k and pushing my luck all the time now"
A bit much for 13, I think.
I listen to some of the songs on here i wouldn't like it if my 10 year old sister listend to it but my 13 year old brother is the one who got me to listen to this band
Good music, good message, bad language.
Language - s--- and f--- scattered throughout album as well as milder words: godd--- and b--tards.
Violence - references to suicide, war, bombs and the like.
Sex - one use of orgasm and not described at all in any way.
Drinking Drugs or Smoking - some references.
Racist or Religiously Offensive Content - References to "white boys" and "black girls" plus a few godd--- or omigod type words.
I must disagree with the 13+ rating here. There is more sex, violence, and drug use than described in the parent's guide. The sex is not just one 'reference to orgasm,' there's also a reference to sodomy (of a dog), and a few other innuendos. Also, the violent references are literate, but harsh and brutal-feeling. It also has an anti-religious song: "East Jesus Nowhere." As an athiest, I didn't mind, but it could be very offensive to others.
I have "ignored" the bad language and chose to allow my boy to listen to Green Day. Their views on war are compatible with ours and I know kids must have something to "rebel" with. This band gives my son a chance to find a voice different from ours but also gives us things to talk about. We listen on the way to school and, believe me, I know every word...!
Very good invitation to engage in mature conversation with emotionally mature children
Loved it! This cd is much less "explicit" than past ones....it deals primarily with the current problems we face in a post-Bush time. There is only one song that uses the "f" word...and quite frankly, if your child(ren) are emotionally mature, I think it can lead to meaningful conversation regarding many issues facing our nation (and the world) today!
21st Century Breakdown is the 8th CD by Green Day. I will review every song and give its content rating.
1. Song of the Century: short song, pretty bad
2. 21st Century Breakdown: best song on the album, very political. Says basstard once.
3. Know Your Enemy: annoying, repetitive, not GD's best
4. Viva la Gloria: two parts: the ballad-y beginning and the rock ending. One of the best on the album.
5. Before the Lobotomy: same as Viva la Gloria. Says f--k once (I'm not stoned, I'm just f--ked up), and references drugs (I'm not stoned/whiskey shots and cheap cigarettes").
6. Christian's Inferno: Terrible song, not even singing.
7. Last Night on Earth: ballad-y, excellent
8. East Jesus Nowhere: has some violence (fire burns today of blasphemy and genocide), references sodomy, and is anti-religion
9. Peacemaker: very violent (I'm the assassin/a Neo St. Valentine Massacre/Molotov cocktails on the house/death to ones at the end of the serenade/death to the girls at the end of the serenade) Mentions orgasm once.
10. Last of the American Girls: allegoric
11. Murder City: fast-paced, rock edge
12. Viva la Gloria?: slow, original but terrible
13. Restless Heart Syndrome: one of the best on the album. Says suicide once.
14. Horseshoes and Handgrenades: the most profane song on the album. Says f--k five times, and is violent (don't you f--k me around, because I'll shoot you down/ destruction, self-annihlation)
15. The Static Age: very pop-y, says f--k once (what a f--king tragedy)
16. 21 Guns: the big single, disappoints
17. American Eulogy: a medley of two songs, very good. Says f--k once (f--king lies), s--t once (s--t about the modern age), and niggger (just about of nigggers throwing gas)
18. See the Light: terrible conclusion
