What parents need to know

Parents need to know that as with most of these compilations sparked by the Kidz Bop series, the actual content doesn't have much of a focus, other than non-offensive, typical fall-in-love topics to which tweens can begin to relate. Nothing here is going to hurt your child, unless you really want them to get a decent pop music education. Just don't look for good life lessons here -- not from songs originally coming from the likes of Britney Spears.

What's the story?

Unlike the Kidz Bop CDs, which frequently use one adult voice on verses, then turn the kids loose on choruses, 4 KIDZ BY KIDZ uses multiple kids to sing the verses as well. Unfortunately, this virtually eliminates any chance for dynamics and subtlety. The Maroon 5 hit "She Will Be Loved," is a good pop song that dies an ugly death here. Choosing kids to sing Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone," isn't the greatest idea, since Clarkson's great voice makes the kids' version pale in comparison. And kids will no doubt recognize that the cover of Smash Mouth's "All Star," from Shrek isn't very good.

Is it any good?

There's very little about this CD that's redeeming. Even though the selling point is having no adult voices, this approach translates into kids yelling the choruses and immediately smashes any delicacies of the originals. The choice of songs on this CD isn't very inspired, either. The actual music is cut rate, with much of it sounding like it's made on less-than-top-of-the-line gear. If you care about the quality of pop music to which your kids listen, investing in the originals is a better idea.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about why songs like these tend to become so popular with kids and tweens. Are artists targeting their particular emotions to sell CDs, or are they just writing about universal things that tend to prompt songwriting?
