Why We Rated This on for Ages 8 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Just a teenage girl singing about a break-up with a bit of anger as she describes some things she hate about a guy. She also talks about what she likes about him.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

"And when we kiss, I'm hypnotized" and "When we're intertwined everything's alright" is all there is.
  • Language:

The worse it gets is "7 things I hate about you."
  • Consumerism:

    A mention of Levi's.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of `7 Things` (CD single) was written by Jessica Dawson

Parents need to know that this song is Miley on her own -- no Hannah Montana on the flip side -- so it's a little more "hardcore," if you can call it that. The 15 year old sings about a recent breakup and declares her "7 things I hate about you." Strong feelings, but the language is fine if you don't mind the word "hate." There's a line about being hypnotized because of a kiss.

  • Families can talk about the dichotomy of Miley Cyrus and her alter-ego Hannah Montana. How do you think Miley has managed such success as both herself and another personality? Which one do you prefer? Why? How do you feel about the fact that Miley is so young and experiencing so much success so fast? Do you think the success will affect her because she's only 15?

What’s the Story?

"7 THINGS" is the first single to debut from Miley Cyrus' upcoming album, Breakout scheduled to be released July 22. It's an upbeat, in-your-face rocker rant, in which the 15-year-old Miley sings about the pain of a recent break-up. In the chorus, she gives a speedy list of the "7 things" she "hates about" her ex. ("You're vain/your games/you're insecure/you love me, you like her/you make me laugh/you make me cry.") The music goes back and forth between acoustic and hard rock guitar, as does Miley's voice from Tennessee twang to rocker-girl-done-wrong wallop.

Is It Any Good?

The song's lyrics are cute and catchy, with a sort of reprieve in the end with Cyrus declaring the "7 things I like about you" ("Your hair/ your eyes/your old Levi's"). So it's not all hate and boy-bashing. It's a good lead to a much anticipated album from the Disney superstar, but parents should keep in mind this is Miley, not Hannah Montana, so the music and lyrics are a bit more direct, and a little less bubblegum.

APPROPRIATE FOR TEENS, IFFY FOR TWEENS!

Miley Cyrus mentions the word "hate" at least about 10 times. Of course, she also talks about kissing and breakup.

    Huh

I do think that this is one of Miley's better songs, but I'm not sure she should be writing lyrics about being in love, breaking up, and hating her ex. Its not that its too mature for her, I just think that its inapropriate to sing about at her age. And I really don't think this is okay for an 8 year old to listen to. I just don't think that a 3rd grader should be singing about being in love and having her heart broken.

    Singing It All The Time!

The fact that there's a hate and like part in this song makes is awesome! Certainly my favourite Miley song!
