The good stuff

  • Messages:

    Themes covered by the lyrics include positive themes, like pursuing your dreams, as well as more grown-up things like heartache and betrayal.
 

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.

  • Sex:

    One song talks about the mall as a place for looking for/at boys. One line says "I check out the boys who are checking out me."

  • Language:

    Profanities are implied in the soundtrack's final song, but are replaced by "whoo's" ("You can move right up to the head of the class/but not if you sit on your big fat whooo!").

  • Consumerism:

    One song, "The Mall" promotes, well, being at a mall.

  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.
 

What Parents Need to Know

About The American Mall Soundtrack

Parents need to know that this is the soundtrack to the MTV made-for-TV movie, American Mall, from the same producers that brought us High School Musical. While some of the songs' themes seem a little more grown-up than the ones covered in HSM (talk about careers and the development of romantic relationships), all of the tracks are wholesome and safe for tweens. One track promotes consumerism, but most of the others have more positive messages of empowerment and being true to yourself.
