Bad Boys II Soundtrack (by Various Artists, Hip-hop)

common sense media says

Compilation is over-produced and a bit tedious

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that young fans of the movie are going to want this CD, and the sex/drug/violence factor is over the top to the point that it almost works as self-parody. But the real problem is that musically, except for a couple of songs, it's just not that good. Buy the "Shake Ya Tailfeather" single and move on.

Positive messages: Violence, sex, drugs, sexism, racism-this CD has it all!
Violence: Hey, guess what? There's lots of violence, too.
Sex: Many sexual references-in most of the songs on the CD.
Language: Too many instances of the "s" word, the "f" word, and the "n" word (not to mention the phrase "They call me Diddy," which gets old fast) to count.
Consumerism: Sean "P. Diddy" Combs's first release in association with Universal is a blatantly commercial venture, with movie sound bytes (and very pretty pictures of Will Smith) throughout.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: "Great dope" is gleefully celebrated in "Smoking the la la la la;" "Smoking weed" in "Realest N *GGAS."

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about if it's actually possible to have too much going on musically. With all the talent on this CD, does it feel like there's just too much to digest?

What's the story?

What's the story?
For the BAD BOYS II SOUNDTRACK, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs gathered an amazing musical lineup, then produced the you-know-what out of 'em. One of the standout performances is "Shake Ya Tailfeather," featuring Nelly, P. Diddy, and Murphy Lee in vocal and rhythmic counterpoint over an infectious rhythm track. Another strong offering is "Girl I'm A Bad Boy" by Fat Joe & P. Diddy, featuring Dre. Snoop Dogg and Loon provide interesting, haunting vocals on "Gangsta Sh--t." However, Beyonce's "Keep Giving Your Love to Me" is mild but sappy; Mary J. Blige gives it her all with a sexy and well-delivered performance, but can't keep "Didn't Mean" from sounding like the musical filler it is. Mario Winans and Foxy Brown give a lackluster performance on "Pretty Girl Bullsh--t," and Justin Timberlake mostly seems to whine on "Love Don't Love Me."

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

With the all-star talent involved in this soundtrack compilation, this should have been a terrific CD. Unfortunately, it's a monotonous, over-produced, and over-promoted album instead. There's nothing much here to distinguish Bad Boys II from other unremarkable hip-hop soundtracks.
