"Best Best" (CD single) (by Missy Elliott, Hip-hop)

common sense media says

What are men good for? Money and sex!

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this song has some mature sexual themes. Elliott talks about how much she loves her boyfriend, explaining how she fantasizes about him on her bed, what great sex they have, and how impressive a certain body part of his is. Elliott also brags about how much money her boyfriend spends on her.

Positive messages: Besides the sexual themes, there's also a lot of bragging about how well this boyfriend takes care of Elliott -- by buying her things. Promotes the image that women desire men for two things: their sexual prowess and their bank accounts.
Violence: Not applicable.
Sex: The song is all about singing the praises of a boyfriend, including what a great lover he is. "He give me, good sex (sex)/He grind (grind), all the time (time)...Got one big, ol' dick (dick), He know how, to put it down (down)/We do -do, do it all-all/He be my-my, bootycall-call/My nookie is his (his), My nookie is his (is his his!)…He's a freak (freak), I'm a freak (freak)/We freak (freak)/all week (week)."
Language: One instance when "s--t" is said and there's the line: "Got one big, ol' dick" -- although in some versions of the song this is edited out.
Consumerism: Part of the reason why the narrator loves her man is because he buys her things. "Got money, on his mind (mind)...He take me, to the mall (mall), He buy me, half the mall (mall)...My dude (dude), buy me shoes (shoes)."
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: One reference to drinking Patrón: "He buy me Patron ('tron)/he buy me Patron ('tron 'tron)."

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about how a song like this portrays romantic relationships. Is it a status symbol to have a boyfriend who makes lots of money and spends it on you? Are there other things more important in a relationship? Is it OK that Elliott, a hugely successful rapper, brags about how much she spends on her boyfriend, or is it a turn-off to listeners. Despite the status of a woman, does the man still need to be the provider?

What's the story?

What's the story?
Slated to be the first single off Missy Elliott's new album coming out later this year, "BEST BEST" was recently leaked to fans. Elliott's collaboration with rising producer Danja details every "best" aspect of dating a fabulous guy (aka money and sexual prowess), and combines her trademark raps with lots of melodic R&B-ish breaks.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

From the title of Elliott's upcoming album Block Party it seems that this female rapper is geared up to have a good time. And that's just what the first single is all about. The lyrics are light and pretty shallow, but the beats and catchy raps are perfect for dancing -- or at least bobbing your head to. The chorus is the only thing that distracts from this single becoming a great party track, as its sluggish disco style sounds a bit dated and doesn't enhance the funky sound Missy Elliott is known for.
