What’s the Story?

On BLUE SKIES, 17-year-old Diana DeGarmo twists her big strong voice around a variety of pop-rock musical styles with mixed results -- from sappy to spectacular. The most fun are silly little ditties like "Then I Woke Up" ("I'm the one that you want/and the one you can't have/the girl that you call/that doesn't call back...and then I woke up") and "Boy Like You" ("We both know that you been cheating off my paper since the seventh grade/You know you did it/Don't go walking away/this is for every girl alive who's ever fallen for a boy like you"). Most impressive are the corny full-tilt ballads that really show off this young woman's vocal range -- for example, "Don't Cry Out Loud."

Is It Any Good?

Like the songs themselves, which careen from style to style with no musical consistency, the lyrics on this album veer wildly from playful to serious to ridiculously sentimental. Production and instrumental performances are slick and smooth, all carefully designed to showcase DeGarmo's voice. So whether you see Blue Skies as showcasing a young performer trying on a variety of musical styles just for fun, or as a project lacking necessary focus and musical integrity, you will remember DeGarmo's big beautiful voice.
