Parents need to know
Parents need to know this single was chosen to be the exit song for contestants voted off Season 7 of the hugely popular American Idol. Ruben Studdard, the former champ from Season 2 croons a cover of the single, originally made popular two decades ago by Kenny Loggins.
Families can talk about how American Idol has mastered marketing music. How does the drama of this reality TV show contribute to the success of the contestants? Studdard, who was recently dropped by his recording label, was selected to sing this song for the show. Does this appear to be a clever way for the show to reignite his sales and further establish the program as a powerful star maker? How has the line between promotion and entertainment been blurred?

"I'm going home today/I've believed I've missed each and every face/Come on and play my music/Let's turn on the love light in the place. Those are the none-too-subtle lines that finalists voted off Season 7 of American Idol will hear through their exit montages. The single, selected to be the official "going home" ditty is a modern twist on Kenny Loggins' holiday-themed song from two decades ago.
Is it any good?
Ruben Studdard, the "Velvet Teddy Bear," is back with this subtle and smooth rendition that actually outshines the original version of the song. Although the single is heavily tied to the American Idol franchise, the song hopefully will transcend the series and stand alone as a quality pop/R&B single. Studdard gives the song an updated treatment with a soulful intro crooning "Play me one more song/that I'll always remember/and I can recall." The song reaches a powerful crescendo with an enthusiastic gospel-inspired chorus that begs the listener to celebrate each contestant as they leave the show.
