Parents need to know

Parents need to know that this album is a collection of classic songs that children have been learning (and loving) for generations. Singing these songs is beneficial to the developing minds of young children, helping the children master verbal skills, internalize musical rhythms, and sing along with others.

Families can talk about why these songs are fun to learn. Which lyrics rhyme? What makes a song live on from generation to generation?

What's the story?

Reviewed by Ruth Saphir Schwarcz & Cedric M. Speyer

CHILDREN'S FAVORITE SONGS, VOLUME 1, from Walt Disney Records, includes more than two dozen kiddie classics. Most likely, some songs will already be familiar to children, but young listeners who don't yet know these songs will love learning them--as kids have for generations. They'll have a great time joining in with the many kids' choruses.

Is it any good?

The recording features Larry Grace's fine lead voice on all tracks; and a nice variety of instrumental solos plus unexpected tempo changes help to maintain everyone's interest throughout. Although some parents may wish for more contemporary sounds and some kids may tire of a few old-fashioned arrangements, the bottom line is that this collection of classic songs is a strong addition to any child's listening experience.
