A Child's Celebration of Broadway
Common Sense Note
Parents need to know that these selections don't represent the standard children's musicals, but they're still appropriate for most young kids. Some under eight won't understand all the lyrics, but many will enjoy the melodies. There are plenty of very positive, confident, and optimistic messages here: looking for the bright side, being proud of oneself, the value of love, and believing in one's dreams.
Families can talk about the moral values presented in the songs. When were you proud of yourself? Who do you love and why? What are your dreams?

This compilation represents a number of famous Broadway shows with songs performed by the original casts. Although not written for kids, these songs (and the morals they present) are positive and uplifting, containing nothing questionable for young ears.
Exposure to America's great heritage of musical theatre is wonderful for your children's musical lives. (It may even form the foundation of further musical participation and study.) These tunes are easy to learn and the words not too complicated for most young listeners. Kids will especially enjoy "I've Gotta Crow" from Peter Pan and the familiar "Lonely Goatherd" from The Sound of Music. Singing along with these show-stoppers is not necessarily educational, but it's a great chance for your kids to work out their vocal muscles on songs other than simple children's tunes.
Liner notes list the shows, performers, composers, and sometimes the years. Unfortunately, they do not offer any story synopsis or other relevant facts about the shows. Still, you can use these notes, and this entire recording, as an introduction to more musical theater for your children.
Fans of this CD might also enjoy John Lithgow's The Sunny Side of the Street.
