What Parents Need to Know

This review of Coco was written by Denise Duval

Parents need to know that this is a collection of mostly wholesome mellow songs. Colbie Caillat exudes California-girl-next-door appeal and the only song with not-so-great lyrics for kids is "Midnight Bottle" where she sings about getting through the pain of a crumbling relationship with the help of alcohol -- but even that song is subtle.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how Colbie Caillat differs from fellow songstresses in her age group. She seems to do a fairly good job of staying out of the tabloids and not projecting an overtly sexy, party-girl image. Why do you think she's stayed out of the spotlight? Does it help or hurt her music? Also, how has MySpace and other Web sites transformed the way musicians become popular?

More on Coco

What’s the Story?

COCO is a soothing compilation of songs mostly about love, but also a bit about life in general. Some tracks are folksy, others are more poppy, but every one of them has a sweet, genuine sound. The lyrics cover familiar relationship terrain such as being madly in love, breaking up, and heartache. Caillat is the daughter of Fleetwood Mac album producer Ken Caillat.

Is It Any Good?

Despite her oft-trod themes, Colbie Caillat manages to cover them in a way that seems sparkling and fresh. It's hard not to get addicted to "Bubbly," her breakout hit single, or be impressed by the adorable tenderness of "Capri," an ode to an expectant mother and her unborn child. This mellow album is very easy for kids of all ages -- and adults -- to enjoy.
