Parents need to know this CD is based on Barney Saltzberg's children's book of the same name. The book was inspired by a true story of a kid who was reluctant to return to school after losing his hair to chemotherapy; Saltzberg's royalties are donated to a cancer research foundation.
Refreshingly absent from CRAZY HAIR DAY is the sort of mandatory zaniness (dancing green elephants!) that causes so much children's music to seem over the top. There are no talking animals or imaginary friends here, just an observation of day-to-day moments shared by families, whether talking about a little girl's preference for soggy cereal or a child's wish that his parents would slow down and just hang out and talk. At the end of the CD, Dustin Hoffman reads the book.
The 13 tracks on Crazy Hair Day are across-the-board mellow in a folksy, acoustic way, and again -- rare for a CD written for kids -- almost completely reality based. All of the songs were written by Saltzberg, but other musicians contribute their talent to the performances -- notably Richard Thompson, Peter Himmelman, and Jackson Browne.
Families can talk about the fact that sometimes even kids can get very sick. Do you know anyone who has been sick? What made them feel better? Families with older kids can talk about ways people can be there for each other during stressful times, whether it's something as serious as cancer, or simply a "bad hair day."
