Common Sense Note
Parents need to know that there's no objectionable material here.
Families can talk about the original band's signature song, "Whip It," and how its quirky and catchy delivery still has the ability to make everyone want to dance and sing along with the band. What makes a song memorable or a hit?
Common Sense Review
Reviewed By: Scott Bierko
Over 20 years ago, Devo's staccato hit, "Whip It," caused a sensation on the airwaves -- as did the band's delightful dorky image. Unfortunately, the band's signature sound never evolved and they disappeared into the landscape of one-hit wonders. Too bad -- there's a lot of talent there.
Transition to the present, and Disney and Devo have decided to reinvent the band as a likeable group of teeny-boppers who strut around the stage pretending to play their instruments amidst a barrage of weird animation. It reminds one of The Monkees, a group of actors who were hired to play the roles of musicians. There's one key difference, though -- The Monkees had some of the best song writers in their tent (Neil Diamond, Carole King, Tommy Boyce, and Bobby Hart) and Dev2.0 has, well, Devo.
That said, the CD and accompanying video are still fun and well-produced. Surely, some kids will be inspired to become pop stars after watching Dev2.0. They make it look like so much fun!
In the final analysis, though, it would have been great to see some of the talent behind the original Devo expand their talents rather than try to pass these old songs and arrangements off as children's music, which it certainly is not.
