What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about the indomitable spirit of New Orleans, even (and especially) in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Also, both Johnette Downing and Jimmy LaRocca say their parents were musicians who taught them this kind of music. If you performed songs in the style of your parents' music, what would it sound like?

What's the story?

What's the story?
Johnette Downing and Jimmy LaRocca's Original Dixieland Band are a winning team on DIXIELAND JAZZ FOR CHILDREN, a collection of 20 sparkling new songs performed in authentic New Orleans style. Possibly the first kids' CD ever arranged entirely for old-time Dixieland instrumentation, the album provides a perfect introduction to an important part of America's rich musical heritage.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

One highlight is "Lazy Sunday," a spirited duet in which Johnette's honey-smooth vocals alternate with the raspy-voiced Jimmy LaRocca on a song that describes the preparation of a mouthwatering meal. Even the less memorable tracks ("Dance and Sing," for example) are saved by lively rhythm tracks and horn arrangements that make this album an authentic original -- and an original delight.
