Why We Rated This on for Ages 12 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Several of the songs talk about treating people badly in romantic relationships, such as "I have been outdone by my own kind/I always traded up, yeah/Now I'm a victim for the first time."

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Only a few sexual references ("Well excuse me for wanting to be/the one and only lock that fits your key").
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

Voegele is the first MySpace Records' artist to capture a sponsored headlining tour and will be promoted with a special tour page on the site with videos and blogs. The University of Phoenix is sponsoring the tour and will receive promotion on MySpace, too.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

"You threw down your cigarette but it's still hot...It's never easy breakin' this old addiction/I've, I've got the reasons."

What Parents Need to Know

About Don't Look Away

Parents need to know that Voegele is signed to MySpace's record label and is promoted on the social networking site. Musically, Voegele's repertoire stays firmly planted in kid-friendly lands, discussing the trials and tribulations of romantic relationships without ever getting graphic.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how social networking has influenced music. Do you feel more connected to an artist who has a blog or video diary? Do you visit the MySpace pages of artists that you like or are curious about? If so, how strong of a marketing tool can social networking be for a musician? Do you think MySpace should have a record label or does the company have an unfair advantage in its ability to promote its artists?
