What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this soundtrack is filled with instrumental mood music, interspersed with '60s-style bubblegum pop and a few originals -- all kid-safe.

What's the story?

Originally based on a British children's show called The Magic Roundabout, the Doogal we'll see is the Americanized version of an animated film about the power of friendship. The DOOGAL MOVIE SOUNDTRACK includes 28 tracks -- many of them tastefully performed orchestral instrumentals written by Mark Thomas, a composer who specializes in children's film music. These pieces are moody and interesting, but they are interspersed with 60s-era cover tunes and a couple of frothy originals, making it a little unclear what the CD wants to be.

Is it any good?

"The Magic Roundabout," performed by Kylie Minogue, has the kind of bubblegum charm that gets a song stuck in your head for days. Other pop offerings include "Magic," performed by Pilot, and the Kinks' "You Really Got Me," goofily covered by Bill Nighy with Catherine Bott vamping operatically around his bad-boy lead vocal. The oddness of combining pop covers and orchestral originals does not allow for a whole lot of musical flow. This CD is a fine memento, but only for fans who adored the movie.
