What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Cynical, depressed, and filled with punk attitude; also very funny at times.
  • Violence:

Some darkly poetic death imagery here and there: "I'm taking all you down with me/explosives duct taped to my spine/Nothing's gonna change my mind/I won't listen to anyone's last words/there's nothing left for you to say/soon you'll be dead anyway."
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

The "s" word is used frequently; the "f" word once or twice.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Dookie

Parents need to know that although the members of Green Day love the word "s--t," as well as a bit of violent imagery and a perpetually depressed world view, their music comes across as sounding, well, sort of cheerful and perky. Some violent lyrics: "I'm taking all you down with me/explosives duct taped to my spine/Nothing's gonna change my mind/I won't listen to anyone's last words/there's nothing left for you to say/soon you'll be dead anyway."

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about Green Day's long career, and what has -- and hasn't -- changed (both in music and in the world) since this album was released almost 15 years ago. Why is this group still considered important, when others come and go? Read the lyrics to "Coming Clean" ("Seventeen and strung out on confusion/trapped inside a roll of disillusion/I found out what it takes to be a man/Mom and Dad will never understand"). What do you think they mean? Are there things in your life you are sure your parents couldn't possibly understand?

I rate this title on for age 14 and give it 5.0
    My concerns are:
    • Inappropriate language
    • Negative message

Good for teens 14 years and up.

Great album as a whole. I would recommend it to anyone who's atleast 14 years old. My only concern is the language and the messages given. There is some profanity in some of the songs, and there's a very "dark" tone to this album which would be considered inappropriate by many for young children and young teens.

  4. Teen Reviewer Age 15
I rate this title on for age 13 and give it 5.0
    My concerns are:
    • Excessive violence
    • Inappropriate language

Awesome album. Typical, angsty teenagers, you know? But great, great stuff. Not for tweens, I think. The language is kind of rough but it's still cool. Music's music, man.

    BUT IT'S AN AWESOME ALBUM!!!!!!!

"D--n" is repeated twice, "h--l" is repeated once, "s--t" is repeated three times, and "f--k" is repeated twice, in "Longview". "W---e" is repeated once in "Basket Case". BUT IT'S AN AWESOME ALBUM!!!!!!!
