Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that this CD -- inspired by the DVD of the same name -- is high energy and great fun. All 14 tracks celebrate friendship and diversity in many languages from around the world. The end result is an entire album that kids and adults won't tire of.

Families can explore new instruments and words from different countries. Where does that drum come from? What country uses the word "Jambo" to say "hello"? Also, you can find the countries on a map and look up their customs and instruments on the Internet or at the library.

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Jennifer Axman

The beloved Dora is back again with a cheery collection of kids' songs from such countries as Argentina, France, Ghana, Russia, Italy, Israel, and China. Most of the tunes are sung by Dora and her friends from the television series, Boots and Backpack. Even Swiper makes an appearance, although you'll have to listen to the album to find out what he tries to swipe! There are also the much-welcomed adult guest vocals from Aaron Neville on "Iko Iko" and Ziggy Marley on "Three Little Birds."

Unlike many kids' albums, parents probably won't want to fast forward through every song on DORA'S WORLD ADVENTURE. If you don't watch it, you may still find yourself singing along with the highly catchy lyrics -- even if you don't know the words of the songs sung in different languages. (Dora does sing the English translation along with the foreign language to help kids understand the music and learn new words.) There are also several interactive songs, such as "Jumbo," that encourage kids to repeat simple phrases ("Hello hello/Hello hello./Everybody hello./Everybody hello.").

The performers on Dora's World Adventure! are silly and fun -- and actually have pleasant enough voices as well. To back them up, the album brings in some unconventional instruments such as the accordion and African drums. And, just like in the television series, this CD does a good job at getting your kid excited about learning new languages and making new friends.

Fans of this album might also want to check out Dora the Explorer: Dance Fiesta! and World Party, or the Dora the Explorer's World Adventure! video game.
