Parents need to know

Parents need to know that Gwen Stefani is perfectly appropriate, if a wee bit sappy, on this single, a track that explores the loneliness of breaking up. The video is elegant and dramatic; sexiest moments involve some writhing around on a dance floor in elegant white satin.

Families can talk about Gwen Stefani's elegant new image. Why do you think she's adopted a more grown-up and sophisticated look? Do you like it when your favorite stars stay true to their original image, or do you find these changes interesting? You can also talk about breaking up and how you get through the hard times. Artistic expression seems to be one way people handle these inevitable milestones. How would you handle it if someone you like rejected you?

Message

Social Behavior:

The most honest (though perhaps not most interpersonally evolved) line is "Why do you act so stupid? You know that I'm always right."

Consumerism:

Nothing in the lyrics; CD package unavailable for review.

Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:

Violence

Sex

Nothing explicit -- more about the end of relationships than anything.

What's the story?

Reviewed by Kathi Kamen Goldmark

Gwen Stefani goes for a new look and feel on "EARLY WINTER," a verging-on-sappy ballad describing the pain of breaking up. Her overprocessed, simpering vocals are a little hard to hear clearly, but the "looks like an early winter" hook is repeated approximately 4,000 times, and it's really all we need to know. The song's music video features Stefani looking dressy and elegant. Though not at all explicit, there's a lot of writhing around on a lonely dance floor with a feather boa which, like Stefani's love affair, has seen better days.

Is it any good?

This single is a release off Stefani's album, The Sweet Escape. Only one moment reveals the spirited spunk of our favorite "Hollaback Girl": a tender line asking the timeless question "Why do you act so stupid? You know that I'm always right!" Who hasn't felt that way during a tough break-up?
