Parents need to know

Parents need to know that although Snoop Dogg plays a dedicated father on his hit reality TV show on E!, this album isn't very family-friendly. There's swearing, references to drugs, alcohol, and smoking, and plenty of sexual comments about women (many of which are degrading), and over-the-top self-praising. But, some of the songs are actually sweet (yes, sweet!) and Snoop has brought on some great talent, both musically and vocally.

Families can talk about hip-hop artists putting out a clean album. Snoop talks about always having the gangsta life in him. Do you think he's able to produce an entire album of inoffensive music? Would it be as successful?

Message

Social Behavior:

All over the place, from making a better life for yourself to degrading women. He's very proud of what he's accomplished and boasts about it a lot (hence the title of the CD).

Consumerism:

A few mentions of soda, alcohol, and car brands.

Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:

Snoop doesn't hide the fact that he likes to smoke pot…a lot. He brings up cocaine, but dismisses it. He also mentions drinking socially. ("Drank all my liquor, know it's all good" and "Roll up and lick the paper if they're able.")

Violence

Considering Snoop declares himself a "gangsta" there's not much violence on the CD. He does talk about growing up in the "hood," going to jail, other people in jail.

Sex

Sexual comments -- some of which are graphic and raw -- are all over the album. A few examples: "I love it when you dance so sexy," "I have two friends/we can have group sex," "See my game is outrageous I got her to the crib/And exchanged some f--k faces," "I used to put it in yo ass/you ain't had it in a while," "When you need that good sex I'm your guy."

Language

"Bitch" and the "N" word are repeated over and over again. Snoop likes to say other words such as "motherf--ker," "s--t," "ass," and "f--k."

What's the story?

EGO TRIPPIN' is a familiar journey with Snoop Dogg, taking the listener down a road of drugs, sex, and swearing. The 21 hip-hop tracks have several musical samplings from jazz, R&B, and even a little bit of country twang.

Is it any good?

All self-declarations of hardcore lifestyles aside, there's something about Snoop Dogg that puts him in a different category from many other gangsta rap artists. He's raw, yet somehow his smooth, laid-back style brings you in, almost masking his frequent cussing, affinity for smoking pot, and directness of what he's going to do to the ladies. He is completely full of himself, though, praising his music and his "coolness" at every moment. Speaking of which, Snoop's remake of The Time's 1981 track "Cool" is one of the best on the album, with Snoop channeling Prince in a pop-funk-hip-hop fusion. Another standout: "Can't Say Goodbye" (featuring Charlie Wilson and The Gap Band) is about how getting out of the hood doesn't always mean the hood is out of you. "Press Play," with its silky-sounding R&B and jazz horns drowning out some foul mouth lyrics, is also worth a listen. This isn't the best album to play during family dinners, but if you can edit out the offensive tracks, there are enough left for older teens to enjoy.

This album is one of my favorites

It's not especially explicit and there's some of the best rap ever here.
