Appealing pop filled with heartbreak and wit.

Why We Rated This on for Ages 11 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Album is a glimpse into the ups and downs of dating, relationships, and young love with no specific message. A brokenhearted boy sings of being dumped and says that "hate is a strong word," but admits, "I really, really, really don't like you."

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Though there are several suggestive lyrics ("You belong in my heart, in my arms, in my bed" and "You get me going and then you say goodbye/I'm heated up and you just leave me there to take care of myself"), they may go undetected because of their lighthearted delivery.
  • Language:

Some repetitive use of "damn" in the song "So Damn Clever."
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

"Friends Don't Let Friends Dial Drunk," is about receiving a phone call from a girl after she's been "out on the town drinking" with friends.

What Parents Need to Know

About Every Second Counts

Parents need to know that these boys deliver pleasing pop tunes that tamely reflect on love, loss, heartbreak, and healing. There are a few songs with more suggestive themes such as "drunk dialing" and manipulating boys into bed, which may go undetected because of their lighthearted delivery.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how life has changed for the member of this band since "Hey There Delilah" became such a sensation. How would you adapt if you went from relative obscurity to being perpetually played on the radio? And because the song was written about an actual person -- with a relatively unusual first name -- how has the real Delilah's life been affected by the success of the song and the media's desire to learn more about her?

    My concerns are:

    • Drinking, smoking, or drug use

    • My highlights are:
    • Positive messages
    • Good role models

PERFECT FOR YOUNGER TEENS/OLDER TWEENS, MAYBE FOR UNDER AGE 10

The only inappropriate parts are "d--n" used in "So D--n Clever" frequently, "Friends Don't Let Friends Dial Drunk" being about drinking, and the whole album is about love, but you can't really call it inappropriate, because there is nothing near explicit.

I rate this title off for age 17 and give it 3.0

I have not listened to this CD, but recently purchased their "All That We Needed" for a pre-teen. Before purchasing I wondered what the lyrics were. I found out after we purchased. There are more than several instances of suggestive lyrics regarding sex. Frankly, there is enough suggestive junk in every form of the media and I didn't want it or need it here for my pre-teen to listen to. Do yourself a favor and buy something else. Their music might be the greatist to many, but all they sing about is broken relationships and I don't need that filling my kids head. There are so many other positive things to fill your head and soul with.

Plain white T's new and used

They are a great band and its a great way to start a love of music with them. In their music video Our time NOW it talks a little sex quote(nervous hands greatful smiles), but it stills gets my vote for a grammy!
