Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that this Grammy-winning group's uplifting message is endorsed by the likes of Maya Angelou, Cornell West, and Marian Wright Edelman. Lively a capella harmonies and spirited hand-clapping drive eighteen solid, uplifting, gospel-tinged tracks delivering messages of self-esteem and hope.

Families can talk about the questions asked and answered on the CD. (Children between the ages of 9 and 12 sent in questions that inspired Sweet Honey in the Rock's songs on this CD.) Maybe you can think of some additional questions -- and write some songs containing the answers.

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Kathi Kamen Goldmark

When it comes to "this-is-good-for-you" preachiness, children's songs often have a tendency to drift over the line of palatability, sacrificing music for message. But when the sermon is delivered by a world-class preacher, who cares? This collection of songs addresses issues of importance to all children, ranging from very personal to global. One highlight, "In the Middle of the Night," describes a child's fear of monsters under the bed, and calling out to family members who come running with kisses and comfort. "Chinese Proverb" reaches far beyond bedtime to promote political responsibility ("Where there is honor in the nation/there is peace in the world"), and other tracks promote literacy, reading, respect for animals and nature, and self-esteem with Sweet Honey in the Rock's signature poetry, unique arrangements, and exquisite harmonies.

Fans looking for other brilliant children's music might want to check out Class of 3000, They Might Be Giants' Here Come the ABCs, Gustafer Yellowgold, and Medeski Martin & Wood.
