What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this recording is packed with traditional folk songs from a variety of sources and in a variety of styles. Many songs ("Give a Little Love," "Getting to Know You") promote inspiring messages, while others impart historical information in a fun way.

What's the story?

Ten years ago, a group of top music figures released this album in limited numbers as a fund-raiser for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. Popular demand then convinced the organization to re-release the recording in a follow-up effort to revive AIDS awareness. Some of the artists on FOR OUR CHILDREN: 10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION are no longer as popular as they were during the disc's first run, but children don't seem to mind -- as long as they recognize the songs. Adults may also enjoy the nostalgic effect of listening to such fab 1980s stars as Debbie Gibson and Pat Benatar.

Is it any good?

Highlights include listening to the lighter side of some typically gruff voices (Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Little Richard) and hearing Elton John introduce some interesting electronic music in "The Pacifier," reminding us that this remarkable artist commands a wide range of musical styles. The lullabies are another high point of this collection. Overall, the combination of talented artists, classic songs, and a worthwhile cause makes this album hard to pass up.
