What's the story?

Reviewed by Kathi Kamen Goldmark

It's easy to see why the members of FRANZ FERDINAND, a four-piece band from Glasgow, Scotland, are becoming the darlings of indie rock. This exuberant and delightful self-titled CD is something that's becoming all too rare these days: rock & roll just for the fun of it. The lyrics don't break any new ground, except perhaps for "Michael," a guy-guy dance tune. "So sexy, you're sexy/You want to see/Come and dance with me Michael," croons a very male-sounding lead vocal. Other songs offer clever poetry along well-worn themes. Quirky guitar riffs, unapologetically derivative, pay homage to influences as diverse as Duane Eddy, the Beatles, the Doors, and Led Zeppelin. More precocious than pretentious, the overall sound is upbeat and art-school intelligent.

Is it any good?

Keeping a solid groove going while keeping the mood light isn't always easy, but this band manages to do so with flair and style. Definitely worth the price of admission, Franz Ferdinand delivers clever rock & roll with a wink and a smile (the band is named after the Austrian archduke whose assassination triggered the First World War).

Great CD! It rocks!

This is a wonderful CD. I just don't get the "14+" on it. Why, it's fine for me and for younger kids too! Pretty much the only thing I found "questionable" was the line in Jacqueline "I'm so drunk I don't mind it if you kill me." But that was pretty much it. My personal favorite on this album was The Dark of the Matinee'. That was super cool! ( So is the music video - that was a bit weird, too!) If System of a Down or Green Day is a bit too explicit, try this band. You won't regret it!

Best Record of The Year

This album is lyrically, instrumentally, and vocally the best album this year. Every song is amazing. There is one swear, the "w" word but that isn't a bad one so I will move on. It has some playful innuendo but nothing explicit. It is fun to listen to. It is indie rock 'n' roll at it's top performance (that says a lot considering indie is my favorite style of music). Plus, this album is mainstream enough to get your girl friend or friends into indie rock. Dark of the Matinee is the best song on the album.
