Get the Picture? (by Smash Mouth, Rock)

common sense media says

Unapologetic, lighthearted, musical fun.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this is fun, carefree, summertime party music. Younger kids will love the car songs ("Hot" and "105"). The material is interesting enough to be appealing to older kids and parents, too.

Positive messages: A plea (on the liner notes) for leukemia research donations to the Presley Scott Harwell Foundation is a nice touch.
Violence: No violence.
Sex: No explicit sexual references.
Language: Squeaky clean.
Consumerism: A couple of passing references to current TV shows, hardly worth mentioning.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: No drugs, alcohol, or tobacco references.

Families can talk about how music can integrate with a time or place, so you think of one when you experience the other. For example, think of some summer hits and see if they make you recall the summertime or an experience you had in the summer.

What's the story?

What's the story?
GET THE PICTURE? is a cheerful offering from Smash Mouth that incorporates skillful songwriting and consistently good musicianship. The overall effect is good-time summer fun, appropriate for the whole family. "Seventh Grade Dance" will comfort middle-schoolers experiencing the ritual torture of pubescent social life; "Hot" is a car song (from the point of view of the car), as is "105" -- a clever tune about sitting in traffic and longing for the fast lane. Metaphorical or not, it works. "Fun" is just that -- incorporating the organ sound made famous by the band called ? and the Mysterians to great advantage, and "Hang On" delivers some punch with a "things are gonna get better -- really" message, something we all need to hear once in a while. The playful reggae feel of "You Are My Number One" adds texture.

Overall, Smash Mouth's fourth album delivers satisfying, party-time fun -- with a crisp intelligence that keeps it from getting boring. The carefree, summertime party music is interesting enough to appeal to older kids and parents, too.
