Common Sense Note
Parents need to know that there's nothing really bad about this song except for a bit of attitude by someone who is tired of people telling her what to do. She says "shut up" once, but that's the most insulting thing in the single.
Families can talk about the need for artists to constantly reinvent themselves. Ashlee Simpson used to be more of a rocker. Does her new pop sound have anything with her sister Jessica or boyfriend Pete Wentz? Why do you think singers try to change their images all the time?
Common Sense Review
Reviewed By: Heidi Kotansky
Ashlee Simpson is mad. Apparently there are all kinds of people telling her what to do and she doesn't like it. Collaborating with powerhouse producer Timbaland, her first single off her upcoming album uses repetition ("Outta my, outta my head/Want you outta my head/Outta my,/outta my head/Get outta my head/Outta my outta my head/Want you outta my head/Outta my, outta my head" is the chorus) and an over-synthesized voice to talk about her frustrations. Like Avril Lavigne, Simpson has done the pop-punk thing, but opts for the softer pop styling on this one, and borrows heavily from the '80s in both sound and playfulness. The lyrics are catchy and completely safe for tweens' ears ("All your opinions, keep them to yourself/Just let me think so I can hear myself") even if they don't have a lot to say. No doubt after one listen, you won't be able to get this catchy pop song outta your head.
Note: Ashlee Simpson's new album won't be out until later this year, so check back soon for a full review. In the meantime, fans might like The Spice Girls or Avril Lavigne.
