Parents need to know

Parents need to know that the Muppets are up to the same old goofy tricks. A few originals are thrown in with some classic holiday songs -- all sung by different Muppets characters. There's nothing to worry about on this CD; every song is very musical, interesting, and perfect for kids of all ages.

Families can talk about when your favorite characters put out seasonal CDs. Do the characters/singers draw you to the CD or do the songs? Do you think it's overload to have a CD for every holiday?

Message

Social Behavior:

Promotes good cheer around the holidays.

Consumerism:

"Santa Baby" does talk about what expensive things Miss Piggy wants for Christmas: a duplex, a ring, and a yacht.

Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:

Violence

Sex

The Muppets talk about mistletoe quite a bit, but in a sweet manner ("There'll be much mistltoeing/and hearts will be glowing/when love ones are near"). Miss Piggy does mention kissing -- or wanting to kiss -- Kermit twice. "How about that mistletoe? Kissy kissy" and "Think of all the fun I've missed/think of all the froggies that I haven't kissed."

Language

Miss Piggy says "shut up" once.

Disney's usual A-Team of musicians makes THE MUPPETS: A GREEN AND RED CHRISTMAS an especially enjoyable, kid-friendly holiday treat. A variety of instrumental beds in many musical styles (polka, swing, blues, rock ... you name it) provide support for those expressively goofy Muppet voices. High points include "'Zat You, Santa Claus?" and "Run, Run, Rudolph" by the Electric Mayhem Band, and "The Man With the Bag" performed by Floyd, Animal, and Zoot. The tasteful, understated guitar solo on Kermit's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is only one of many examples of the excellent instrumental and production standards on this album.

Is it any good?

The whole project is infused with a bouncy energy. Lyrics are clearly sung and easy for very young children to understand, yet clever enough to appeal to parents and older siblings. And the instrumental tracks, particularly the horns, approach perfection. For charming musical holiday fun, you can't beat the Muppets -- they're family-friendly, clever, and as comfy as a favorite old sweatshirt.
