Why We Rated This on for Ages 12 and Up

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Playful, sarcastic tones about selfishness and vanity: "I don't care what you think as long as it's about me" and "these friends they don't love you ... just the hotel suites."
  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Minor innuendo: "Heat wave in your pants," "Free love on the streets, but in the alley and I ain't that cheap, now."
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

One reference to "a breath like another cigarette."

What Parents Need to Know

About "I Don't Care" (CD single)

Parents need to know that this song is about "finding happiness in misery," even if it means presenting a life of vanity and selfishness. There's mention of a cigarette and very minor innuendo in a few lines, but that's it. Side note: The video is a little more crass, involving the band members dressing as nuns urinating in an alley, flashing strangers, and stealing tips from a street musician.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the image of young punk-pop bands like Fall Out Boy. Do you think it's necessary to present a particular image to sell a product, such as albums or concert tickets? Should the music be enough on its own, or do we, as consumers, buy into the "whole package"?

... I was looking for Punk Rock?

Uh, Fall Out Boy is SOOO far from punk, it's just not even funny that someone made the mistake of labeling it as punk. I am surprised that FOB ever made such an honorable label, even by someone who doesn't know music. I don't know how I feel about FOB, but this song isn't too awful.
