Idlewild Soundtrack
What’s the Story?
OutKast's IDLEWILD is more a companion CD than a soundtrack of the 2006 film Idlewild. It incorporates gospel, swing, blues, soul, and acid rock. There's even a 1930s-style ragtime on "When I Look in Your Eyes," a theatrical and whimsical delight. An all-star roster turns up to lend their talents, including Khujo Goodie, Killer Mike, Li'l Wayne, Macy Gray, and Snoop Dogg.
Is It Any Good?
Idlewild starts out with references to Laurence Olivier and Cab Calloway -- your first clue that this is no ordinary hip-hop album. While Andre and Big Boi are strong on originality and musical risk-taking, they can be weak on sequencing and consistency. Idlewild often careens wildly from one extreme sound or theme to another, and a lot of the musical experimentation doesn't really work.
