What's the story?
Reviewed by Kathi Kamen Goldmark
Aly & AJ's debut CD, INTO THE RUSH, features mostly original songs by Disney's current flavor of the month, Alyson and Amanda Joy Michalka. Marketed a la Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan, the appealing sisters manage to fit nicely into the Disney mold while demonstrating that they have some genuine musical talent and a commitment to gentle messages of social consciousness too. Two of the best tracks are cover tunes: Aly & AJ's versions of the Lovin' Spoonful's "Do You Believe in Magic" and Katrina and the Waves' "Walking on Sunshine."
Is it any good?
Despite banal lyrics, Aly & AJ's originals pack a promising punch with messages about some tough subjects. "I Am One of Them" addresses child kidnapping, and the girls claim a commitment to educating young people about the need to look out for one another and learning techniques to keep themselves safe and empowered in an increasingly dangerous world. Spirited and energetic, the girls deliver strong vocal performances and age-appropriate concern about the world around them.
