Parents need to know

Parents need to know that the word "f--k" is sprinkled a few times in "Makes Me Wonder." The boys love to sing about sex, although most of the lyrics are poetic enough to pass as innocuous. They do cross the line a few times ("So give it up, and don't pretend/And spread your arms and legs across the bed/And when you shake, you won't regret" and "Struggled to memorize/The way it felt between your thighs/Pleasure that made you cry/Feels so good to be bad," for example). One song talks about catching someone cheating on someone and shooting the secret lover. The rest is pleasant, safe (if whiny), cute-boy pop.

Families can talk about the issue of romantic or sexual jealousy as described in the song "Wake Up Call." How do you handle feelings of jealousy, or breaking up with a girlfriend or boyfriend? Is it possible to get through the pain and become friends?

Message

Social Behavior:

Too whiny to have any kind of valuable message.

Consumerism:

Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:

Violence

One song describes a violent reaction to an unfaithful lover.

Sex

There's a fair amount of sexual innuendo and a few explicit lines: "So give it up, and don't pretend/And spread your arms and legs across the bed" and "Struggled to memorize/The way it felt between your thighs/Pleasure that made you cry/Feels so good to be bad."

Language

"F--k" appears in the chorus of "Makes Me Wonder."

What's the story?

Reviewed by Kathi Goldmark

Maroon 5's pleasant pop leans heavily on breakup songs on IT WON'T BE SOON BEFORE LONG, with one track after another addressing love gone sad. Whether wistful ("You don't cry, you don't care anymore since you walked out the door" on "Not Falling Apart"), resigned ("It really makes me wonder if I ever gave a f--k about you" on "Makes Me Wonder"), or vengeful ("I had to shoot him dead so he won't come around here anymore" on "Wake Up Call"), the band's perky delivery is at odds with its message. "Wake Up Call" has the most questionable content, about finding another man in your lover's bed and then shooting him. Other songs describe feelings that range from outrage to denial to apologetic acceptance after rejection -- and after a while, honestly, it gets a little tedious.

Is it any good?

3
Even though the band borrows heavily (if superficially) from a rich legacy of soul and R&B, there's no passion, soul, or spirit in these songs. The songs are ostensibly about the challenges of either maintaining or ending romantic relationships, but the glossy production and cute, hook-filled melodies make the less-than-clever lyrics sound as though they were phoned in. Teens going through their own breakups might find solace in these lyrics, others may simply find them whiny. Either way, this is not a "first-date" CD -- its bleak lyrics, coupled with the band's apathetic delivery, will inspire just about anything but romance.

sex is only issue

This band has greta music although adressing sex once and a while. Words like F*** are used, but hold no sexual perposes. Buy it and listen to it for the sound, not for the content.

Jane is better, but this is good too.

I LOVE "Wake Up Call" and "Makes Me Wonder." There's swearing, but everyone I know swears anyway so im not offended. Jane is better, but Before Long is still fun!

Great Music

The music was great. The themes were not as ranged as Songs About Jane, but if you look in general, the music is catchy, you can tell they mean it. Wake Up Cal is pretty iffy, with gun violence at partners infidelity, but othere than that, not much language. I always heard Makes me Wonder so they do not say "f--k." You probably can buy a better version on Itunes. Bonus Tracks are the best. You cannot find it in America in CD, but you can buy it on Itunes for $10. I am not kidding, this album is good. They rate it bad because they say all iffy things are crap except for a few exceptions.

M5's second album...

Only song I've really listened to is Makes me Wonder. It's a cool song but pretty dirty. This album seems more pop than the first album. And the idea of shooting a guy your girlfriend was cheating on you with sounds so outrageous that it makes me laugh!

Offensive

I love the beat to most of the songs but once I read the lyrics, I was upset. I don't think there was an "explicit lyrics" warning when I purchased this CD. Anyone who is used to hearing bad words and sexual innuendos on CD's will not bat an eye, but for my kids ears, no way. I should have read a review before I spent my money on it. Hearing the words "G..D.." and "F..k" are offensive and should be to all parents.

It's not that bad... goes over young kids heads.

I'm a huge maroon 5 fan. They have talent. Most people sing about sex now, so it's not unusual. This cd is wonderful for kids around 12 and up.
