Common Sense Note
Parents need to know this ballad of sorts explores all the trauma of failed romance. It could be a little heavy or brooding for some younger listeners, but might give older kids a good outlet for expressing feelings of heartbreak or loss.
Families can talk about the many emotions that go along with a break up. How important is it to get perspective on emotions and not become immersed in a failed relationship? When is it time to move on? The song is full of energy with driving beats and powerful vocals. Does getting angry and venting by singing along with a song like this help hurt feelings?

Ashlee Simpson brings elements of doo-wop, R&B, rock, and electronica together for a song that's all about breaking up. With lyrics like "Everything's such a blur, it didn't come out right/All of a sudden it's cold and we're falling apart/please don't leave me alone in the dark," "LITTLE MISS OBSESSIVE" details every excruciating detail of the split. Note: Simpson's album Bittersweet World comes out in April so check back soon for our full review.
Breakin' up may be hard to do, but it is sure fun to listen to. Simpson's new single is refreshing on several levels. First, there's the sincere treatment of the subject matter. Simpson's vocals acutely express pain without pouring out overly sentimental lyrics. Second, the melting pot of various musical styles -- from the doo-woopy chorus to the techno voice-overs -- works surprising well. Simpson's back-up singers contribute greatly to creating a richly layered effect, with the result being a modern sound clinging to classic roots.
Other ladies that transcend musical genres: Gwen Stefani and Lily Allen.
