On Gwen Stefani's first solo album, LOVE, ANGEL, MUSIC, BABY, the No Doubt singer keeps the party going from beginning to end, with catchy dance grooves that somehow sound both classic and original. Impressive tracks include "Hollaback Girl," produced by The Neptunes, and "Bubble Pop Electric" with Johnny Vulture. "Real Thing" includes both New Order and Wendy and Lisa, and actually works. A high point is "Rich Girl," on which Dr. Dre and Eve appear along with a familiar musical reference to "Fiddler on the Roof," vaguely Middle-Eastern-sounding percussion, electric rhythm guitar, and a sweetly sung chorus of background vocals.
Is it any good?
It's not squeaky clean by any means -- there's some gleeful raunch and a lot of nasty-girl attitude -- but the CD is delightful because of its many musical juxtapositions and surprises. There's some sexual innuendo, a light sprinkling of four-letter words, and a drug reference or two, but your teens have heard a lot worse on CDs with far less musical integrity and imagination. Stefani provides energy and attitude with her uniquely cynical-but-sassy little girl vocal style, but the uninhibited and imaginative arrangements are the real star of the show.
