Parents need to know that Melissa Errico's sweet, ethereal voice is a perfect vehicle for lullabies. With her highly-touted experience as a theatrical performer, Errico approaches this soothing collection of originals and remakes with sophistication and finesse.

What's the story?

Melissa Errico has a lovely voice, but she also has good taste -- and a feel for song interpretation that puts LULLABIES AND WILDFLOWERS across as a children's CD that respects its young listeners' taste as well. A lovely mixture of traditional songs, originals, and quirky surprises (a lovely cover of Judy Collins' "Since You Asked," Tom Petty's "Wildflowers," the Gershwins' "Someone to Watch Over Me," and the Beatles' "Goodnight"), this CD shows off Errico's theatrically-trained voice to best advantage.

Is it any good?

 

High points are the traditional folk songs. "Mockingbird" and "Hushabye," are especially effective when delivered with Errico's subtle touch. The rock covers are less successful, and Errico's original, "Gentle Child," is the weakest track -- she's far better at interpretation than songwriting. Over all, this is a scrumptious collection of beautifully-performed, sophisticated, and intelligent music for children.
