Parents need to know that Krista "Funky Mama" Eyler is having a whole lot of fun writing and singing about life in the kid zone. Her strong voice and excellent rock-n-roll instincts (not to mention a more-than-adequate backup band) insure that songs like "Potty Train" and "Ooo, Ahh, Oww!" (about combing out the tangles in long hair) come across as vibrant musical descriptions of small moments in children's lives.
What's the story?
Krista "Funky Mama" Eyler's energetic songs feature her big pretty voice front and center, along with her electric guitar-playing, fronting a very good band, on songs that reflect the small moments and everyday triumphs of children's lives such as potty training and combing out tangles in long hair. A former on-air television reporter, Eyler left the front lines of Kansas City media when she became a mom -- apparently transforming herself into the rockin'-est soccer mom in the Midwest.
Is it any good?
The most successful tracks on MOO JUICE are those that stick squarely in the rock-n-roll pocket. A capella "Down, Down, Baby" and "Can You Hear Me? / 1-2" don't offer enough other than Eyler's voice to be truly impressive.
She shines the brightest when fronting her band, in arrangements on which the strong vocals are part of a well-constructed whole. Highlights are "Moo Juice," a full-tilt rocker about milk in the fridge, and "Potty Train," a delightful zydeco/train beat ditty with a "we're so proud of you" message for toddlers.
