Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that 50 Cent is up to his tedious old tricks. The explicit version of this movie soundtrack album is filled with sexist, violent, and racist sentiment -- and the edited version sounds just plain ridiculous since there is nothing left after the edits.

Families listening together might wonder why this kind of monotonous posturing is still so popular. Why can't rappers be successful without promoting violence and using racist and sexist language?

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Kathi Kamen Goldmark

50 Cent has taken his sexist, misogynist, violent posturing onto the silver screen with his first movie, and the inevitable ferociously-marketed soundtrack, MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN'. A muscular, beautiful, intense young man with tattoos as well-displayed as his attitude, 50 Cent breaks no new ground on this CD. The background tracks are as tedious, and the vocals as monotone, as ever. The sad thing is, 50 Cent is talented. He has an ear for instrumentation and for vivid, visceral storytelling. There are some wonderful rhythm tracks and clever rhymes. But he's so stuck on the "F" and the "N" words, not to mention a brand of misogyny that verges on the pathological, that it's hard to wade through all the quicksand long enough to find the elusive "redeeming social importance" of his droning, monotonous profanity. If only he'd change pitch once in a while...or, maybe, say something nice about a woman...

But no, it turns out that MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN' is exactly as boring and uninspired as its title. Kids might love this stuff now, and even enjoy getting a rise out of their parents by downloading and playing it. But -- really -- they'll get bored soon enough. Because this music may try to be shocking, sexist, and nasty, but mostly it's just plain tedious.
