common sense media says

The messages are good; the music is boring.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that although there's no troublesome content on Braincandy's CD, there's also not much about it that's entertaining. Familiarity with the great DVD series is almost required in order to appreciate this CD version, as without that context, the music on its own may not make much sense to listeners.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about the fact that Braincandy's CD is packaged in recycled plastic, and the insert is printed in soy-based ink because the producers believe in protecting the environment. Can you think of some things you can do at home or school to help the environment?

What's the story?

What's the story?
Overly synthesized and carelessly produced, BRAINCANDY: MY 5 SENSES is a forgettable project that bills itself as "A Yummy Music & Sound Exploration." Instead, it's a lackluster collection of 20 songs aching for cleverness, focus, and fun. A chorus of little kids' voices tries gamely to blend with mechanical-sounding rhythm tracks, pedestrian guitar playing, and derivative arrangements that drift around without ever really getting anywhere.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Without the visual backup from the DVD series, My 5 Senses is unable to attract or hold the listener's attention. And it doesn't help that the producers' earnest good intentions seem to get in the way of anybody ever expressing an original musical idea -- or having any fun. The CD insert boasts that "Braincandy cares about helping give children a healthy world to grow up in. That's why the packaging is made with soy-based inks and 30 percent post-consumer recycled material." If only the songs didn't sound so recycled, we might have something here.
