Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that this Grammy-nominated live CD contains only two new songs -- all the rest are on other Trout Fishing in America recordings. The somewhat strange (in a good sort of way) lyrics talk about topics from an alien nose invasion (AKA a booger) to snowflakes named Bob to hair parties. The result is goofier songs than the average cutesy numbers most associated with children's music. A DVD version of the concert is also available.

Families can choose their favorite songs and dance along by following the "call outs" in the lyrics ("Right now we would like to invite everyone to clap along/'cause that's how the song sounds best"). Families can also try to pick out the different instruments used in each song. Do you hear an accordion? A bass? A guitar?

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Jennifer Axman

Recorded in Arkansas in front of an audience of more than 1,000 people, MY BEST DAY features fun songs from the zany duo of Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood. This CD explores a variety of musical styles from acoustic folk to blues to rock and roll. But don't expect any typical songs about animals at the zoo or singing the ABCs on this CD. Instead there's clever lyrics on tracks such as "Day Care Blues" ("I'm sick of all these crayons, I've done these puzzles twice/I've already spent seven hours in school bein' nice!/I'm feelin' mighty bad, I don't know what I want to do/sure ain't this, y'all/I got the low-down no-fair after school day care blues") and "Sailing" ("A pelican was talking to his gull friend/about the way the walrus made him feel/They stopped in for a drink down at the sand bar/and caught a tuna from BB Kingfish and Lou Seal").

Most of the songs will be familiar to Trout Fishing fans as they appear on their previous CDs, but there are two new songs: "I've Got a Friend (and He Won't Be Quiet)" about someone who loves to talk, even with his mouth open, and "My Pants Fell Down," a wacky song retelling the story of a boy who goes through the day with his pants around his ankles because he forgot his belt.

The artists' interaction with the audience provides many opportunities to get up and move. For instance, "My Hair Had a Party Last Night" encourages fans to have their own hair party: "Shake your head/put your fingers in it/really mess it up!" There's even a different twist on "Simon Says" ("Simon says raise your wrong hand/Simon doesn't know what he's talking about") that keeps the audience in stitches, and a performance of their self-proclaimed silliest song, "Sailing."

If you want more of this goofy duo, check out their other CDs -- or try another great harebrained group: the Wee Hairy Beasties.
