Common Sense Note
Parents need to know that Christian artist Mat Kearney uses lyrics that avoid explicit language, but offer sophisticated ideas and imagery that will make these songs most appealing to more mature tweens and teens. Although billed as a Christian artist, his religious talk is very subtle and can cross over to any faith.
Families can talk about different ways in which you can get a message across. Is it more effective to be very obvious about your agenda, or to tell interesting stories that make a more subtle point?
Common Sense Review

Mat Kearney's NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE is an impressive collection of beautifully-written songs performed with whole-hearted passion and smooth, poetic intensity. A versatile artist who handles gentle pop, edgy rap, and power ballads with equal competence, Mat Kearney is primarily a storyteller -- skilled in getting his point across with a combination of vivid visual description, visceral emotion, and heady intelligence. Fans should know that nearly half of the material on Nothing to Lose (his major-label debut), was previously released in 2004; new fans will appreciate the depth and variety of the songs presented here, and some of the retreads sound freshly-mixed. Although billed as a Christian artist, Kearney offers an inclusive, generous world view that will make his songs ring true to fans of any faith.
Those looking for a little more Mat can find his music on the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack, Season 3. For more intelligent, well-written songwriting check out John Mayer's Continuum.
