What Parents Need to Know

This review of "Now or Never" (CD single) was written by Heidi Kotansky

Parents need to know that tweens will be all over this first single from High School Musical 3: Senior Year -- after all, it's associated with the phenomenon of High School Musical. Happily, the song -- which talks about working together to win a basketball game -- is tween-appropriate, with positive messages.

  • Families can talk about the hype around HSM. The third installment doesn't come out for months -- why is Disney already promoting it? Do you think you'll buy the album before even seeing the movie? Also, why do you think the series is so popular?

More on "Now or Never" (CD single)

What’s the Story?

This single is the first song from the upcoming, sure-to-be-a-hit movie High School Musical 3: Senior Year. It bounces from a quasi-hip-hop intro to pumping cheerleading beats to a slow jam between star sweethearts Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens). It's all about teamwork and believing in yourself.

Is It Any Good?

Tweens will eat up this song, and not just because it's associated with HSM. It's a fun, fast-paced anthem that has the entire cast getting listeners pumped for the next installment in a series that leaves audiences clapping their hands and rooting for each and every one of the characters. It may not the best song musically or lyrically ("All comes down to right now ... What are we gonna be? T.E.A.M., team!"), but you've got to give it credit for making anyone who listens feel motivated. The only part that kids might not get into is the cheesy interlude in which Troy asks Gabriella to give him inspiration, but that doesn't mean they still won't have the lyrics memorized in no time.
