Tenacious D: Pick of Destiny

What’s the Story?

The thing about Jack Black and the "f word" is how much fun he seems to have saying it -- over and over again. Something about his wholehearted enthusiasm for pushing the explicit-language envelope comes off as funny. The TENACIOUS D: THE PICK OF DESTINY will appeal to those who enjoyed the film: It's a well-produced reminder of the stars' chemistry and their fun with parody. Like Weird Al, Spinal Tap, and the Rutles, Tenacious D makes fun of music that takes itself too seriously with lovingly executed performances.

Is It Any Good?

Joined by Meat Loaf and Ronnie James Dio, Black, partner-in-crime Kyle Gass, and drummer Dave Grohl tear out of the gate on "Kickapoo," setting the stage for a young rocker's rebellion and ultimate quest for "Rock." The song also sets the stage for a full-tilt obscenity fest that will delight kids who like that sort of thing -- and horrify parents who don't. The saving grace is the artists' goofball sense of humor. Are the lyrics inappropriate for polite company? Yes. Is the premise immature and kind of dumb? Absolutely. But there's something about the delivery -- the comic timing and deadpan performances -- that defuses the raw power of those uncomfortable words.
