Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that this band belts power ballads and up-tempo pop songs that are essentially tame -- even though they're almost always about women and relationships. One of the album's tracks, "Pictures of You," has been featured extensively in TV promos for the decidedly adult drama Brothers and Sisters The song accompanies a montage of images from the ABC series that shows everything from siblings to soldiers to some steamy scenes of couples kissing.

Families can talk about how using an emotional song on TV can boost the ratings of a show as well as the band's album sales. What other songs can you recall that became hits after being in a TV show or commercial? In your eyes, does this success dilute a band's talent?

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Conny Coon

With the tremendous success of Maroon 5, it's not surprising several emerging bands would want to emulate their sound. Connecticut-based The Last Goodnight is one of them. But while their sound is similar, and POISON KISS is as slickly produced as any of Maroon 5's albums, The Last Goodnight is actually easier on the ears – and less likely to offend. You'll find nothing explicit or even remotely racy, just a steady stream of songs that trace the evolution of romantic relationships -- from the beginning to when they turn bad to the bitter breakup. Thankfully, lead singer Kurtis John has an earnest voice that lends the simplistic lyrics more style, substance, and layers than they actually deserve, turning what could be sappy songs into polished power ballads.

Older music fans may want to sample some Maroon 5 and might also enjoy Fall Out Boy.

Social Behavior

There's a lot of importance put on being in a relationship, and in one instance ("I'd rather be miserable with you than ever be alone"), the lyrics actually promote sticking with a bad relationship.

The album's single "Pictures of You" was featured prominently in promotional spots for the new season of the ABC adult-themed drama Brothers and Sisters. The band will tour with American Idol contestant Elliott Yamin and is scheduled to appear at Disney's Grad Nite next April.
