Why We Rated This on for Ages 10 and Up

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

There's a lot of importance put on being in a relationship, and in one instance ("I'd rather be miserable with you than ever be alone"), the lyrics actually promote sticking with a bad relationship.
  • Violence:

A single lyric that states: "I know I heard a shot on the fourteenth floor."
  • Sex:

Lightly suggestive lyrics ("Just let your body do the talking and we speak the truth") that will likely be lost on younger listeners.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

The album's single "Pictures of You" was featured prominently in promotional spots for the new season of the ABC adult-themed drama Brothers and Sisters. The band will tour with American Idol contestant Elliott Yamin and is scheduled to appear at Disney's Grad Nite next April.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Poison Kiss

Parents need to know that this band belts power ballads and up-tempo pop songs that are essentially tame -- even though they're almost always about women and relationships. One of the album's tracks, "Pictures of You," has been featured extensively in TV promos for the decidedly adult drama Brothers and Sisters The song accompanies a montage of images from the ABC series that shows everything from siblings to soldiers to some steamy scenes of couples kissing.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how using an emotional song on TV can boost the ratings of a show as well as the band's album sales. What other songs can you recall that became hits after being in a TV show or commercial? In your eyes, does this success dilute a band's talent?
