What’s the Story?

Jennifer Lopez is said to be reinventing herself on REBIRTH. But despite a catchy number or two (just try to get "Get Right" out of your head once you've heard it a few times) her fourth studio album mostly falls flat. Lopez just doesn't have the vocal chops required to hit this one out of the park.

Is It Any Good?

"Get Right," the first single, percolates with manic horn riffs and the kind of infectious energy that makes thin vocals irrelevant. But as the well-produced tracks roll along, it becomes more and more apparent that Jennifer Lopez really doesn't have much going on in the way of range or tone. By the time she slogs through the overwrought, ridiculously overproduced ballad "(I Can't Believe) This is Me," those who care about actual singing will have had way more than enough.

Most of the tracks are formulaic and predictable, hardly the new direction that the title seems to imply. The songs don't have much lyrical substance, but if there is a message it's not a great one: Clichéd images of giving it up for love rule the day. Overall, the fun of a few great dance tracks does not equal a new sound.
