Rocketship Run
What’s the Story?
Laurie Berkner, along with pals Susie Lampert and Adam Bernstein, delivers two dozen well-produced, beautifully-performed, mostly-original songs on ROCKETSHIP RUN. Billed as a musical rocket-ship journey in search of treasure, the CD features songs in many musical styles from samba to jigs to gospel-infused country. Laurie's clear-as-a-bell soprano, backed by some imaginative instrumentation, guarantees a smooth and pleasant -- if not terribly exciting -- trip to the moon on gossamer wings.
Is It Any Good?
Highlights on Rocketship Run include "Let's Samba," one of the more energetic tracks, and "Five Days Old" -- with a gorgeous a capella intro sliding into fine banjo work and perfect country-style harmonies -- a rare song written from the point of view of an infant, rather than his or her ambivalent older siblings. "Mr. Bassman (and Piano Girl)" features excellent piano playing and fun instrumental virtuosity. Toddlers can sit back in between dance tunes and enjoy the ride.
