Parents need to know that the Bummkinn Band specializes in appealing, country-style songs -- each one about a very specific concept or idea that'll be familiar to most very young kids. Older siblings and parents may roll their eyes after one listen, but toddlers will enjoy the easy-to-understand lyrics about friendship and self-esteem and energetic musicianship.
What's the story?
Let's get this straight: These fun, accessible, country-style kids' songs are performed by people, but the people are performing as characters. So "Bummkinn Bandmates" Rosie Mae Bummkinn, Big Red Bummkinn, and Mighty Maverick Bummkinn are really Kimber Breaux, Sam Nickell, and Ryan Bueter. OK, fair enough, but then there's Joe Bear Bummkinn, a teddy bear (known as the "Buck Owens of the stuffed animal world") and ROCKIN' THE YEEHAW is presented as a story-album about Joe Bear's journey from the big city of Stone's Throw to the small town of Hullaballoo.
Is it any good?
Phew. After several listens, we're still not sure if this ambitious concept comes across, but it doesn't really matter. Bummkinn songs are fine on their own as easily-understood musical celebrations of moments in a child's day. The group's playing, singing, and songwriting stop short of brilliant, but friendly enthusiasm and energy carry the day.
