Common Sense Note
Parents need to know if they want to inspire their tweens to behave badly, this is the perfect song. Ashlee Simpson is on a mission to misbehave and makes this concept appear cool and glamorous. One "f--king" is bleeped out.
Families can talk about the message behind the lyrics. What type of lifestyle does Simpson promote by signing about sleeping late, drinking, breaking stuff, and picking fights? Is she rebelling against something? If so, what?
Common Sense Review

Girl power is taken to another level in Ashlee Simpson's single RULE BREAKER from her new, digital-only EP, Outta My Head which also features "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)" and "Catch Me When I Fall" from I Am Me. In the song, Simpson takes on the role of bad girl and shouts aggressive lyrics about breaking the rules because she can.
Although it's titled "Rule Breaker," this single should be more aptly named "Rebel Without a Clue." It's difficult to take the innocuous Simpson seriously when she shouts lyrics like "You don't want no problems/you ain't got no beef!" And, it's hard to pinpoint what exactly she's rebelling against. The fluffier singles on the EP fare better -- with "Catch Me When I Fall" standing out for its refreshing sincerity. "Rule Breaker" doesn't promote a good role model for young girls or a good image for Simpson, and her attempt at falling somewhere between gangsta chick and punk princess falls painfully short.
Note: Ashlee Simpson's new album won't be out until later this year, so check back soon for a full review. In the meantime, fans might like The Spice Girls or Avril Lavigne.
