What parents need to know

Parents need to know that though these songs don't have obvious educational value, the lyrics can be used to help children develop visual imagery. Adults will enjoy revisiting Art Garfunkel and some of the more familiar tunes such as Cat Stevens's "Morning Has Broken," John Sebastian's "Daydream," and the Beatles' "I Will."

What's the story?

Art Garfunkel, best known as the non-songwriting half of Simon & Garfunkel, produced this album and dedicated it to his son, James, and his wife, Kim. The collection contains folk songs and covers of tunes by such pop luminaries as Lennon/McCartney, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, and John Sebastian.

Is it any good?

Garfunkel employed first-rate musicians in creating this sweet collection of songs. The soft voices express loving sentiments and create an atmosphere of closeness and protection. Beautiful poetic language pervades.

The best tracks include the title song, "Who's Gonna Shoe Your Pretty Little Foot?" with its sweet simple harmony (Garfunkel's wife, Kim harmonizes with him), and "You're A Wonderful One." This up-beat bluesy toe-tapper, benefits from a driving bass, tambourine back-beat, and great background vocals. Children will enjoy hearing Garfunkel's young son James on "Good Luck Charm," (he sounds like an Elvis Presley wannabe). Garfunkel fans will delight to his rendition of "Morning Has Broken," reminiscent of his earlier hits, especially "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

What families can talk about

Families can talk about the meaning of the poetic language in "Lasso The Moon." What pictures do they see in their mind? Why do they think the singer is saying this? ("If I were a rocketeer, I'd scale the universe to bring your heart a star each morning...If I had a lariat made of dreams come true I would lasso the moon for you.")
