Parents need to know

Parents need to know that Maria is a strong example of a brave young woman in search of her destiny. "I Have Confidence" offers a great lesson in examining---and confronting--your fears. Ask kids how the song's changing music reflects this development.

Families can talk about how music helps you get through tough and trying times. Then (to prove the point) create personal lyrics to "My Favorite Things" or sing out in the chorus numbers. The movie's story can also be used as a springboard to teach older children about the Nazi regime and the Holocaust.

What's the story?

Reviewed by Marina Torres-Nemeth

THE SOUND OF MUSIC SOUNDTRACK, from the movie based on the memoirs of Maria Von Trapp, is a wonderful story about finding oneself, opening closed hearts, creating family, and holding to one's personal values. Julie Andrews stars as Maria (the "failed" nun who takes a job as nanny to a widower's seven children), and she has never sounded better. With her lively spirit---and these wonderful songs--Maria captures the children's hearts and their father's. The liner notes offer information on the legendary musical theater team of Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Is it any good?

Winner of five Academy Awards in 1966 (including Best Music and Best Picture), The Sound of Music stands as an all-time classic to be shared with your children. These songs (and their inspiring messages) are among movieland's best. You may pass over the nun's choruses and the wobbly "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" after the first few listens -- but this is still entertaining, uplifting music for all to enjoy.

The best Rogers & Hammerstein EVER!!!!!

This is a wonderful, fabulous soundtrack for kids of all ages. It teaches the musical scale while kids can have fun with it. I am 13, and this is my absolute FAVORITE CD EVER!!!!! It's especially fun when you can change characters and change your voice with it. All around wonderful good clean music, which is so hard to find in a world of noise pollution, such as rap.

Fantastic

'The Sound of Music' is a delightful compilation of the Rogers & Hammerstein songs found in the musical. Educational, as it features the song "Do Re Mi" which teaches the Von Trapp children the musical scale, and fun, these songs are appropriate for any age, and are uplifting and enjoyable for years.
