Split Personality
What’s the Story?
Cassidy is way over the top on SPLIT PERSONALITY, exploiting every offensive word and stylistic cliché in the genre. Catchy hooks and clever lyrics keep the CD from careening into truly awful. There's a delicious rhyme or two and a little socio-political consciousness. There's also a whole lot of explicit sex, macho posturing, sexism, racism, gun play, intoxication, and that now-overdone spoken-word dad/kid moment. This must have all been pretty exciting, even groundbreaking, a few years ago, but Split Personality ends up sounding more like a genre self-parody than anything else. Nearly every song seems a cliché, from beginning to end.
Is It Any Good?
The performances are good, the arrangements creative and interesting, and the artist relentlessly self-absorbed and self-referential. Somehow, it all ends up feeling a little ridiculous after a while.
