What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Debbie, a dean at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, offers a collection of well-known children's stories told by way of original songs in a variety of musical styles. Young kids who can't get enough of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and the Three Little Pigs will enjoy hearing these stories told in the form of perky original songs with easy-to-understand lyrics.

What's the story?

Debbie is Debbie Cavalier, a dean at the Berklee College of Music and singer-songwriter-musician with a sweet warm voice who knows her way around a keyboard. Her friends are a group of talented sidemen (plus one woman fiddle player) who help bring Debbie's original children's music to life with tasteful, textural instrumental arrangements. Straightforward and fun, Debbie's STORY SONGS AND SING ALONGS will delight very young children, especially those who can't get enough of their favorite fairy tales, told here in the form of original songs.

Is it any good?

Debbie and Friends pride themselves on versatility, and songs vary stylistically from straightforward pop to folksy to the world-music-influenced rhythms that are apparently required on every kids' CD these days. The most successful are those songs on which Debbie gets to showcase her clear, sweet, Karen Carpenter sound-alike vocals over simple tracks, and all of the songs promote educational concepts and self-esteem without sounding too preachy. Parents and older siblings are likely to tire of these songs fairly quickly, but preschoolers will adore them.
